The pages on this web site document MY procedure and assembly of my Carden Edge 540

I am by no means a professional or "master" builder and these procedures may not be the best methods for you.

Carden provides a nice construction guideline and color photos as an aid to building their kits.

I have chosen to build things in a little bit different order than they lay out in their manual

Part 9 - The Stabs

See The stab layout from the assembly booklet. Once again, follow this layout, it works !!

Cut seven sheets of 1/16" x 4" x 48" in half to make 14 pieces 24" long

See I do small cutting jobs on a self healing mat. This gives longer blade life and saves cutting the work surface on the bench

See the stab skins taped and cut to size as per the plans

See the stab foam cores in their shucks

See the stabs placed on the skins for a trial fit

See The stab wing tubes are capped before gluing them in place so the ProBond won't get inside the tube

See The tube end caps are sanded flush with the tube. Notice the turnbuckles and fittings

See Hangar 9 turnbuckles.

Left hand thread on one end, right hand thread on the other. Makes for infinite adjustment on the length of the turnbuckle.

See Transferring the hinge line location to the foam core using a square on the bench

See Same thing on the tip end

See Join the wing root mark to the tip mark and draw the hinge line

See Draw a line for the servo wire trough (in this case 3" from the hinge line)

I have decided to install a wing tube support at the outboard end of the tube (Carden doesn't provide for this)

See Mark the length of the tube on the surface of the stab core

See Hot wire cut a slot for the 1/8" lite ply tube support (bring the slot and support to the hinge line. It will get flush with the TE of the core when the stab is parted off for gluing the TE on. It will then glue flush with the 1/2" thick TE

See I made the supports 3" long. Slide the support into the slot and mark a hole for the tube with a long pencil.

See Take the support back out and drill a hole the same size as the tube. Slide the support back in, press the tube in place

See Mark the oversized support for trimming flush to the surface of the foam core

See Sand the support to the marks and re-check the fit is flush to the core surface

See Spread your ProBond and put the stabs in their shucks same as we did earlier with the fin / rudder assembly

Well, the cores have cured overnight and we can do a bit of work

See Take the weights off of the stabs and inspect your work

See the excess skins need to be trimmed flush with the cores

See after sanding the skins flush, notice the servo wire channel

See no no no....the Edge does NOT have a full flying stab !!!
